Denim Fabric Sourcing from India: Rigid vs Stretch, 8–14 oz and What to Specify

SPECIFICATION GUIDE / INDIA SOURCING / 2026
India offers a broad denim base for fashion brands, workwear companies and private-label programs. The practical sourcing question is not simply where to buy denim. It is how to define the fabric before sampling, match it to the correct mill, and control the variables that affect fit, shade, durability and delivery.
Openbiz helps international buyers source denim fabric and coordinate garment manufacturing through one accountable partner in India. We match requirements with suitable, vetted mills or factories, arrange sampling and quotations, monitor production on the floor, and coordinate export documentation through delivery.
This guide covers the key decisions: rigid versus stretch, 8–14 oz weights, raw versus washed denim, composition, certifications, minimums and in-line quality control.
01 / RIGID OR STRETCH
Rigid denim , structure first
Rigid denim normally uses 100% cotton and contains no elastane. It has a firm hand feel, stable body and traditional indigo character.
Choose rigid denim for:
- Classic five-pocket jeans
- Raw denim and heritage products
- Denim jackets
- Utility garments and workwear
- Structured overshirts
- Long-wear programs where fabric character matters
Rigid denim requires greater attention to shrinkage, skew and fit approval. An unsanforized raw article can shrink materially after washing. A sanforized article offers better dimensional control but still requires a wash test against the approved standard.
Stretch denim , mobility first
Stretch denim combines cotton with elastane, also called spandex. Common compositions include 99% cotton / 1% elastane or 98% cotton / 2% elastane. Higher elastane levels support closer, more flexible fits but can change recovery, hand feel and long-term performance.
Choose stretch denim for:
- Slim and skinny jeans
- Women’s fitted bottoms
- Comfort-focused everyday jeans
- Uniforms requiring ease of movement
- Fashion garments with body-contouring fits
- Workwear where mobility is important
The percentage of elastane is not enough to define performance. Your specification should also state elongation, recovery and growth after testing. Stretch without adequate recovery can create bagging at the knees, seat or waistband.

02 / WEIGHT SELECTOR , 8 TO 14 OZ
Denim weight is generally expressed in ounces per square yard, written as oz/yd². Approximate GSM equivalents are shown below. These are indicative ranges; always approve the supplier’s actual test report.
| Denim weight | Approx. GSM | Typical applications | Operating note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 oz | 270 GSM | Shirts, light overshirts, summer bottoms | Soft, lighter and easier to sew |
| 9–10 oz | 305–340 GSM | Shirt-jackets, light jeans, fashion jackets | Useful in warm climates |
| 11–12 oz | 373–407 GSM | Everyday jeans, casual bottoms | Balanced weight and durability |
| 13 oz | 440 GSM | Core jeans, structured jackets, workwear | Stronger body and more break-in |
| 14 oz | 475 GSM | Heavy jeans, trucker jackets, rugged workwear | Firm hand; higher sewing and wash load |
Shirts: 8–10 oz
Use 8 oz for lightweight shirts and soft overshirts. Move toward 9–10 oz when the garment needs more body, such as a shirt-jacket or heavier Western-style shirt.
Jeans: 10–13 oz
A 10–11 oz fabric supports lighter, more comfortable jeans. For standard all-season jeans, 11–13 oz is a practical range. Choose 100% cotton for a rigid product or add 1–2% elastane for comfort stretch.
Jackets and workwear: 12–14 oz+
A 12–13 oz denim provides structure without becoming excessively heavy. Choose 14 oz or more for rugged workwear, heavy jackets and products where abrasion resistance and firm construction are priorities.
The stated weight should identify the test condition. A 13 oz loom-state or finished fabric may feel lighter after garment washing, particularly after stone, enzyme or bleaching processes.
03 / RAW, WASHED OR FINISHED
The finish determines the fabric’s appearance, hand feel, shrinkage and commercial positioning.
| Category | Definition | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Raw denim | Unwashed or minimally processed denim with a firm indigo surface | Heritage jeans, premium rigid programs |
| Washed denim | Fabric or garment treated through processes such as rinse, stone or enzyme wash | Casual fashion, softer retail products |
| Finished denim | Dyed, treated and mechanically finished fabric supplied ready for cutting | Repeat production and controlled bulk programs |
Raw denim. Approve the loom-state condition, shrinkage allowance and intended wash route before bulk. If the final garment will be washed, approve a washed development sample rather than judging only the raw fabric.
Washed denim. Specify the wash recipe or visual reference, not simply “medium blue.” Include shade, abrasion level, contrast, softness and acceptable variation.
Finished denim. Confirm whether the quoted weight is before or after finishing. Review width, skew, shrinkage and surface appearance on the finished fabric supplied for cutting.
For repeat programs, the approved standard should include a physical swatch, colour reference, technical data sheet and wash reference. One visual description is not enough.
04 / THE DENIM SPECIFICATION FILE
A complete enquiry to denim fabric suppliers should include the following fields:
- End use , shirt, jeans, jacket, uniform or workwear.
- Weight , target oz/yd² and acceptable tolerance.

This file allows Indian denim fabric manufacturers to quote the same requirement on a comparable basis.
05 / INDIA HUBS , AHMEDABAD AND MUMBAI
Ahmedabad , integrated denim capacity
Ahmedabad is an established denim and cotton-processing centre. The wider Gujarat cluster includes integrated mills with capabilities across spinning, weaving, dyeing and finishing.
The hub is suitable when you require:
- Rigid and stretch denim at mill scale
- Broad 8–14 oz development
- Organic and recycled fibre programs
- Consistent dyeing and finishing systems
- Export-oriented documentation and compliance
- Repeat production with defined technical standards
Industry sources identify major Ahmedabad-area denim producers and integrated textile groups, including Arvind, Nandan Denim and other established mills. Article-level availability, certification scope and minimum quantity must still be verified for each enquiry.
Mumbai and Bhiwandi , flexible cluster access
Mumbai and the surrounding Bhiwandi textile cluster provide access to powerloom production, mid-sized suppliers and fashion-oriented finishing capabilities. This can be useful for smaller development programs, special constructions and selected stretch or washed articles.
The correct supplier depends on more than location. Capacity, machinery, article history, compliance, testing capability and production records must be reviewed before matching.

06 / MOQ AND SAMPLING REALITY
Minimums vary by mill, construction, colour, yarn, elastane content and finishing route.
A standard stock article may be available at a lower quantity than a custom-developed denim. New indigo shades, organic fibre traceability, special widths, recycled yarns and complex finishes usually require more development time and a larger production commitment.
A practical sampling sequence is:
- Send the complete specification and end-use information.
- Review two or three suitable article options.
- Compare fabric swatches and technical data sheets.
- Test shrinkage, stretch, recovery and fastness.
- Make a garment sample using the intended wash route.
- Approve the physical standard before bulk.
- Confirm bulk quantity, lead time, packing and documentation.
Do not approve denim from a photograph alone. The same nominal weight can produce different hand feels, recovery levels and wash results.
07 / QUALITY CONTROL , EARLY SIGNALS
Denim quality issues are manageable when they are checked before final packing.
| Risk | What we check | Control point |
|---|---|---|
| Shade variation | Roll-to-roll and lot-to-lot colour continuity | Standard light booth and approved shade swatch |
| Stretch loss | Elongation, recovery and growth | Lab test before cutting and post-wash verification |
| Shrinkage | Warp and weft dimensional change | Agreed AATCC or ISO wash method |
| Surface defects | Slubs, streaks, holes, barre and weaving faults | 4-point fabric inspection |
| Skew and bow | Alignment across the fabric width | Fabric inspection and garment-panel review |
| Fastness failure | Washing, rubbing and perspiration performance | Lot-wise laboratory testing |
| Width inconsistency | Usable width against marker plan | Roll measurement before production |
For stretch denim, buyers commonly use ASTM D3107 or ISO 14704-1 methods, subject to the buyer’s manual. For dimensional stability, AATCC 135 or ISO 5077/6330 may be specified. The method and tolerance should appear in the purchase specification.
Openbiz provides in-line quality control rather than relying only on final inspection. Our team checks production against approved specifications, flags shade or construction issues early, reviews corrective action and tracks the order through export coordination.

08 / SUSTAINABILITY CHECKPOINT
Sustainability claims should be tied to a fibre, process or certificate.
Possible routes include:
- Organic cotton with a valid GOTS or OCS scope
- Recycled cotton or recycled polyester with relevant certification
- Lower-water or ozone-based wash processes
- Reduced-impact or alternative indigo systems
- Effluent treatment and chemical-management controls
- Traceable chain-of-custody documentation
GOTS covers organic fibre content alongside processing, environmental and social criteria. OCS focuses primarily on verifying organic material content and chain of custody. They are not interchangeable claims.
Request the certificate, licence or scope details for the exact supplier and production process. Verify that the scope covers the relevant stages, such as weaving, dyeing, finishing or cut-and-sew.

FAQ / QUICK ANSWERS
Which Indian cities are best for denim fabric sourcing?
Ahmedabad is a primary integrated denim hub with broad mill capacity. Mumbai and Bhiwandi provide access to powerloom suppliers, mid-sized manufacturers and selected fashion finishes. The right choice depends on the article, quantity, compliance and repeat-production requirement.
Is rigid denim always 100% cotton?
Usually, yes. Rigid denim is traditionally a non-stretch cotton twill. Some products may use alternative fibres or comfort constructions, so composition should be confirmed on the technical data sheet.
What is the best denim weight for jeans?
For standard jeans, 11–13 oz is a practical range. Choose 10–11 oz for lighter comfort-focused garments and 13–14 oz for structured, rugged or raw denim products.
How much elastane should stretch denim contain?
Many comfort-stretch articles use 1–2% elastane. Higher levels create more stretch but require tighter recovery and growth testing. The correct percentage depends on fit, climate, garment construction and target performance.
Can Openbiz source denim and manufacture jeans?
