Single jersey : the core T-shirt fabric

Single jersey is the standard choice for lightweight and midweight T-shirts. It has a smooth face and a technical back, with comfortable extensibility across the width.

A 30s combed cotton yarn commonly produces a lighter single jersey, while 20s or 24s yarn produces a heavier fabric. In the English cotton count system, a lower “s” number indicates a coarser yarn.

Cotton-spandex single jersey, often around 92–95% cotton and 5–8% spandex, is used where stretch and recovery matter. It requires additional testing for elastane percentage, growth and recovery after washing.

Pique : structured polo fabric

Pique has a raised, textured surface created by its knit structure. It is more substantial than basic jersey and gives polo shirts a cleaner shape.

Fleece : warmth through structure and finishing

Fleece normally uses a multi-yarn construction with a soft or brushed inner surface. Two-end fleece is suitable for midweight garments. Three-end fleece offers greater density and stability for heavier sweatshirts and hoodies.

Cotton-polyester blends such as 80/20 cotton/polyester are common in fleece because polyester can improve durability, dimensional stability and cost control. A 100% cotton fleece is also available when natural-fibre content is the priority.

Brushing, raising, compacting and softening must be listed separately in the technical brief. “Fleece” alone does not define the inside finish, weight or pilling performance.

Rib and interlock : supporting constructions

Rib is used for collars, cuffs, waistbands and neckbands. Its principal specification is not only GSM but also rib ratio, stretch and recovery. A 1x1 rib and 2x2 rib will produce different visual and performance results.

Interlock is knitted with two sets of needles. It has a smoother appearance on both sides and generally offers better opacity and stability than single jersey. It is useful for premium T-shirts, babywear and garments where the reverse side may be visible.

A fabric specification should identify the yarn as clearly as the fibre.

Yarn count

For cotton knits, yarn count is commonly expressed as Ne, or English cotton count.

Count is a planning reference, not a substitute for finished GSM. Two fabrics with the same yarn count can finish differently because of stitch length, machine setting and finishing treatment.

Combed versus carded cotton

Carded cotton retains more short fibres. It is generally more economical and can offer a slightly fuller, more natural surface.

Combed cotton removes a larger proportion of short fibres and impurities. It normally gives a smoother hand, cleaner appearance and more consistent yarn.

For premium T-shirts, combed or compact yarn is usually preferred. For cost-sensitive basics, carded yarn may be suitable if the final appearance and pilling result meet the buyer’s standard.
